4 Signs It’s Time for a New AC

As we head into the warmer summer months, you may be noticing your air conditioner is struggling to keep up with your cooling expectations. If this happens, it may be time for an AC installation in Brighton.

Just give our team a call to schedule your in-home assessment, where we can talk to you about your options for repairing your existing unit or upgrading to a newer model. In the meantime, you can keep reading to learn four signs that can indicate your air conditioner is reaching the end of its lifespan.

Alarming Sounds

If your air conditioner suddenly begins to make noises that you’ve never heard before, consider it a red flag that something is wrong. Your air conditioner will not change operation for any reason other than an issue with how the components are working together.

Examples of alarming sounds could be banging, screeching, scraping, or even persistent noises like rattling or hissing. If an AC noise makes you wonder what’s going on, it’s probably a good idea to call our team for service. In the meantime, you should turn your air conditioner off so that damage doesn’t worsen between now and when we visit your home.

Impact to Airflow

You can have changes to airflow in a variety of different ways. One example is having weak airflow coming out of the vents around your home. This can be exclusive to one or two rooms or impact your entire home.

In the case of widespread airflow problems, your AC may be the cause. Try changing out your air filter if it is dirty and see if that makes a difference. A clogged air filter can prevent enough airflow from entering your AC.  If your filter isn’t the problem, you may need to have your unit and the attached ductwork checked out.

Lack of Cooling

It’s also possible that the airflow is plenty strong, but it isn’t cold enough to make a positive difference in your indoor air temperature. When this happens, your air conditioner may continue to run and run without being able to cool your home down effectively.

This can lead to high energy costs and widespread damage inside your air conditioner as components work harder and longer than they were designed to. A lack of cool air can point to problems with the refrigerant lines that need to be checked out by a professional.

Bad Odors

If the air blowing out of vents around your home starts to smell bad, that’s an issue because conditioned air should be neutral. Examples of bad odors include a damp smell that may indicate mold growth. Or you can have a burning odor because something inside of your air conditioner is overheating.

A dusty smell can mean that your ductwork needs to be cleaned. If dust and dirt build up inside of the system, eventually those particles will mix in with clean air and blow back out into your home, ultimately lowering your indoor air quality.
